Audio and Drama Recording Workshops

These are some of the posters I've put together for our recording workshops we've ran at Voice-Plus Academy of Arts. Each of these were full day workshops, open to up to 14 kids at a time.

These days involved the kids learning a cut down and modified version of the original stories, and taking on the roles of some of the characters for acting out in the recording studio. I always ran with 4 microphones in the recording booth, giving the kids a chance to interact with each other while being recorded but also limiting the amount of extra noise that could be made by having more people in the room. The photo below shows the main voice microphones setup and ready to be moved into position for the kids. The 2 extra C1000 microphones to the right were setup up for use later during the foley sound recordings.

After the main body of recording, I'd take the kids through the process of creating sound effects and foley sound to accompany the recordings. These ranged from general footsteps, the sound of a house falling from the sky and Buzz Lightyear's wings deploying. While I advised the kids on what to do, supplying items and how to use the equipment, I'd let them have some fun with creating the sounds themselves.

While I would show the kids what the editing process would involve, I'd usually handle the post-production myself after the day was over. This involved choosing the best takes, slicing and shifting them around the make them more coherent, and applying extra effects like convolution reverb for different room and environment sounds.
